Cross Works’ Vision for Ibrahim Al Khalil Road, Mecca
As 2026 begins and Cross Works takes on new opportunities from its recently established Riyadh office, the new year also offers a moment to reflect on earlier work delivered across the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
One such project is our masterplan and public realm vision for Ibrahim Al Khalil Road in Mecca—a key arterial route connecting directly to the Masjid Al-Haram. Shaped by a legacy of continuous pilgrimage, Mecca presents a uniquely complex urban condition: characterised by seasonal population surges during Hajj and Umrah, constrained land supply, pressure on historic urban fabric, increasing transport demand, and the realities of an extreme climate.
Our proposal, titled Vision for Ibrahim Al Khalil Road, sought to respond to these challenges by reimagining the corridor as a “Garden Street”—placing pedestrian experience at the forefront of the urban environment. Through the introduction of increased tree cover, soft landscaping, and water elements in multiple forms, the scheme aimed to soften the microclimate while enhancing spatial quality along the route.
User experience formed a central pillar of the masterplan, with activity programming structured around Worship, Contemplation, Learning, Relaxation, and Everyday Life. The proposal balanced fast and slow movement along the corridor, integrating new public transport infrastructure while restoring a sense of human scale through targeted mixed-use infill. Commercial, community, and cultural buildings were strategically positioned to support both pilgrims and local residents throughout the year.
Rooted in climate responsiveness, crowd dynamics, and the demands of a high-intensity urban environment, the vision proposed the creation of a ‘global garden’—a more walkable, liveable public realm for one of the world’s most significant spiritual destinations.
