Andijan Masterplan, Uzbekistan

A one thousand hectare masterplan on the outskirts of Andijan, the eastern-most city of Uzbekistan, and one of the country's most historic. Cross Works' overall brief was to provide an additional 3.5m sq/m of floor space to the city, in order to house a population of 140,000 residents, with an additional transient population of employees and visitors. The masterplan included supporting commercial, cultural and community uses, all distributed according to a carefully curated neighbourhood plan, each with a 'community centre' at their heart.

The design process involved careful consideration of the challenging topographic conditions on the site; the alignment of highways and urban blocks that would require the least amount of ground movement; all whilst preserving the natural landscapes and waterways on the site. The project was an exercise in providing a framework for future population growth, whilst enhancing and protecting the landscape; given the requisite large quantum of development as defined by the brief.youtube.com
